Welcome to the Business Studies Department

GCSE Business Studies

Why study Business Studies?

By following a Business Studies course you will:

  • have an understanding of what is happening in the news
  • learn about the people involved in business and economic activity
  • understand how ICT is used in a business
  • gain a good knowledge of business that will provide a basis for further study

 

GCSE Business Studies

Year 11   Business Start Up

There are 3 Themes in Year 11:

  1. Business Start Up – You will study how a business starts up and the importance and role of the entrepreneur.  You will also learn about sources of finance
  2. Production – You will study the types and methods of production; quality assurance models and health and safety.
  3. Marketing:  You will learn about customers’ needs and wants.  You will study methods of research and sampling; competition that a business may face, and the marketing mix.

 

Year 12   Business Development 40%

There are 4 Themes in Year 12:


• Finance: You will have the opportunity to use ratio analysis to interpret final accounts.
• Managing People:  You will learn about recruitment and selection, and developing people through training, motivation and appraisal.
• Business Growth:  You will study why a business succeeds or fails; and why it may grow.
• Business Plan:  You will learn about the content of business plans and the reasons for developing them.

Written paper 1 hour 40%                   

 

 

3 Controlled Assessment done in Years 11 and 12 worth 20% each

The controlled assessments combined are worth 60% of the overall GCSE

 

A-Level Business Studies

BTEC Level 3 in Business consists of 6 Units, completed over two years

Students do not need to have studied Business Studies at GCSE level but good skills in Maths and English are necessary.  Many students who have followed this course have gone on to university to take business related courses or into employment in the business sector.

Assessment

There are 6 Units which are assignment based, internally marked by the class teacher and externally moderated by BTEC.   Deadlines for the units will be set by the teacher in consultation with the students.  These deadlines must be met by all students.

 Year 13 Unit 1 – The Business Environment

• Different types of businesses and their ownership
• How businesses are organised to achieve their purposes
• The impact of the economic environment on businesses
• The impact of political, legal and social factors on businesses

 

 Year 13  Unit 3 -  Introduction to Marketing

 

• Assignment, marked by class teacher, externally moderated by BTEC
• The role of marketing in organisations
• The use of market research and marketing planning
• How and why customer groups are targeted
• Develop a marketing mix for a new product or service

 

 Year 13 Optional Unit – To be decided in consultation with class

 

 

• Assignment, marked by class teacher, externally moderated by BTEC

 Year 14 Unit 2 – Business Resources

 

• Assignment, marked by class teacher, externally moderated by BTEC
• The recruitment documentation used by an organisation
• The purpose of managing physical and technological resources in a selected organisation
• Sources of internal and external finance for a business
• Interpretation of financial statements in a business

 

 Year 14 Unit 4 – Business Communication 

 

• Assignment, marked by class teacher, externally moderated by BTEC
• Types of communication used in a business
• To present business information effectively, to a professional standard
• Legal and ethical constraints in relation to the use of business information
• How to communicate business information using appropriate methods
