GCSE Child Development

Aims

 

Child Development encourages students to:

  • develop the knowledge, understanding and skills (including practical skills) required in Home Economics
  • develop a knowledge and understanding of human needs in a multicultural society
  • increase their knowledge and understanding of relevant technological and scientific developments
  • develop a critical and analytical approach to decision-making and problem-solving
  • examine issues that affect the quality of human life, including an appreciation of diversity
  • evaluate choices and decisions in order to develop as informed consumers
  • actively engage in the study of Child Development to develop as independent learners

 

Unit 1 Parenthood, Pregnancy and Childbirth 20%

Written paper 1 hour. Completed in Summer of Year 11. Topics include:

  • Parenthood and responsibilities
  • Pregnancy
  • Healthy diet and lifestyle in pregnancy
  • Birth

Unit 2 Child Development (0–5 Years) 20%

Written paper 1 hour. Completed in Summer of Year 11. Topics include:

  • The newborn baby
  • Physical, Intellectual, Emotional and Social development of the child up to five years
  • Childcare provision
  • Sources of support available
  • Safety, first aid and childhood illnesses
  • Choosing clothes and shoes for young children
  • Weaning and dietary needs of the child

Unit 3 Controlled Assessment 40%

Investigation Task

Internally assessed and externally moderated

Unit 4 Controlled Assessment 20%
