Welcome to the English and Drama Department

GCSE English

CCEA’s GCSE English Language and English Literature builds on the pupils’ experience of English at Key Stage 3.  The specification is compatible with GCSE English Literature

specification. Work submitted for the Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening components may be based on texts studied for assessment in English Literature.

Unit 1   Personal Writing & Reading Multi-Modal Texts 20%

Section A: Single task requiring a personal written response

Section B:  Two multi-modal texts allowing you to demonstrate functional reading skills

This unit is a 1 hour 30 minute external exam paper

 

Unit 2   Functional Writing and Reading Non-Fiction 20%

Section A:  Functional Writing Skills

Section B:  Tests Functional Reading

This unit is a 1 hour 30 minute external exam paper

 

Unit 3   Speaking and Listening 20%

Three activities:

  • An Individual Presentation & Interaction
  • A Discussion
  • Role Play

This unit is a Controlled Assessment

 

 

Unit 4   Studying Spoken & Written Language and Writing Creatively 40%

This unit is a Controlled Assessment made up of 3 tasks.

  • Task 1:  The Study of Spoken Language (10%)
  • Task 2:  The Study of Written Language (15%)
  • Task 3:  Writing Creatively (15%)

GCSE English Literature

GCSE English Literature builds on the pupils’ experience of English at Key Stage 3.

The specification is compatible with GCSE English Language specification. Texts studied for assessment in GCSE English Literature can be used as the basis for work submitted for the Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening components of GCSE English Language. This specification can not be entered alongside GCSE English.

Unit 1   The Study of Prose 25%

Written paper allowing you to show your ability to respond critically and imaginatively to a prose text.

This unit is a 1hour written paper.

 

 Unit 2   The Study of Drama and Poetry 50%

  • Section A: Drama, including Shakespeare
  • Section B: Poetry based on an anthology of 12 poems
  • Section C: Unseen Poetry
  • This unit is a 2 hour written paper.

 Unit 3   The Study of linked Texts 25%

  • Linked study of Shakespeare and a heritage prose text
  • 2 part response to task:

                   Part A: Shakespeare (10%)

                   Part B: Prose text and then comparison (15%)

  • This unit is a Controlled Assessment.
