Beautiful Butterflies

27th Jun 2017

Did you know the number of butterflies and moths have decreased by 30% in the last forty years. Three quarters of all species of butterflies are now in decline. The pupils of St Mary’s decided this year to ensure, more butterflies were added to our local ecosystem.

Firstly we bought Caterpillars and were able to watch their rapid growth from tiny black ribbons to 6cm long, fat caterpillars in only a week. We watched their fascinating life cycle as each caterpillar was transformed into a chrysalis. Then the long wait began. Every day we watched each chrysalis until finally a beautiful Painted lady butterfly emerged.

After watching the butterflies for a few days we then released them into the world. It truly was a wonder of nature to observe.
