Decade of Centenaries Programme 2016

The Council has developed a Decade of Centenaries Programme 2016 to acknowledge the anniversaries of the Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme.

Recently a group of our students, got the unique opportunity to attend a one day workshop in Down County Museum in Downpatrick.

These workshops were fun and very interactive. They explored the history of 1916 while utilising today's technology and social media resources.

Within these workshops, students were divided into 2 groups. Both grouped looked at;

  • The Easter Rising producing a short comic book on the role of Cumann na mBan members during this time. In this workshop they used iPads and comic creation software to create their pieces of work. The workshop also allowed students to examine issues of gender equality and suffrage movements at the time, including what the proclamation hoped to achieve.
  • The Somme and students had to create their own recruitment or anti conscription posters around the First World War. They used green screen technology and software such as Photoshop to create their content. This workshop allowed them to explore issues of propaganda and use imagery and text at the time, compared to modern day advertising methods.

Students then produced a news broadcast from during or in the aftermath of both historical events.

As well as learning about the two main events, students gained new, digital skills training that can be employed in the future learning across al subjects.
