Soroptimist International Public Speaking Competition

On Tuesday 17th November 2015 two students from St Mary’s High School, Niamh Ennis and Shauna Higgins, took part in the Soroptimist International Public Speaking Competition which was held in Denvir’s Hotel. All students were highly commended for their excellent oratory.

The aims of event were: to encourage girls to play a more prominent part in public life, to improve the art of communication, to encourage girls to develop the skill to speak effectively, to articulate with clarity and to develop self-confidence and personality.

Sheila Crea from the Soroptimists commented on the, “impressive performance” of the students from St Mary’s and how “they demonstrated the skills and confidence which will stand them in good stead in the future.”

Niamh Ennis spoke about ‘Does the Paparazzi help or hinder the purpose of a free press?’ and demonstrated her skills as a spokesperson. Whilst Shauna Higgins chose the topic of ‘Striving for Perfection – is it healthy?’ to debate about with clarity.

The English department would like to congratulate the two students who participated in this worthwhile event.
